General Rules and Regulations for Best Of Competitions

Please read these rules COMPLETELY as well as the rules of each category before competing:

  1. The Best Of Competition is open to everyone.
  2. Any person entering more than one exhibit must use the same name and full mailing address, along with phone numbers on all exhibits.
  3. Articles exhibited must be the work of the person in whose name they are entered.
  4. No articles shall be allowed to compete for more than one ribbon, nor shall it be entered in more than one class.
  5. The exhibitors assume all risks and damage or loss either to person or property for any cause whatsoever. It is further expressly understood between the exhibitor and the Prince George Farmers Market that said Best Of Competition incurs no liability or obligation to the exhibitor, other than to permit the exhibitor to use the grounds for exhibits.
  6. The Prince George Farmers Market reserves the right to refuse any entered item and to require removal from the grounds any exhibit which the Best Of Committee shall for any reason deemed unfit.
  7. Any exhibitor who interferes with the judging will be immediately excluded from competition.
  8. The judge’s decision is final.
  9. Articles presented for exhibition shall remain on display for the duration of the Farmers Market. No articles shall be removed without the permission of the Chairperson of Best Of Competition.
  10. Awards shall be forfeited upon early removal.
  11. The Prince George Farmers Market reserves the right to adjust rules, entries and areas of competition that may become necessary due to oversight or unforeseen circumstances.

RULES FOR BEST OF COMPETITION

Canned Goods and Baked Goods Competition

Entry Dates & Times

Entries for all food competitions can be brought to the Best Of Tent on Saturday, July 27th between the hours of 8:00 am and 10:00 am. Judging will start promptly at 11:00 am. There will be no contestants allowed in or near the Best Of Tent during judging. Canned goods entries must be removed Saturday, July 27th immediately after 12:00 pm when the market closes. All baked goods will be disposed of on Saturday after the Best Of Competition if they are not picked up immediately after 12:00 pm as they are no longer safe for consumption. Please bring all baked goods on disposable trays and cover well (preferably a large zip lock bag). The Best Of Competition will not be responsible for broken dishes.

Ribbons and Prizes
RIBBONS WILL BE AWARED IN EACH CATEGORY
according to total points. Good luck!

Point Scale

100 Points—First Place—Blue Ribbon
90-99 Points—Second Place—Red Ribbon
89 & Below—Third Place—Green Ribbon

Junior Division—Baked Goods Only
The Junior Division of the Baked Goods Competition will be divided into one (1) age group of 12 and under. Any entries for ages 13 and over will be judged in the regular adult competition.


RULES FOR BEST OF COMPETITION

Food Preservation—Canned Goods

Category Rules:

  1. USDA approved canning jars & lids required (Standard Mason Jar/Similar)
  2. All jars must be sealed with jar lids and rings. The rings should not be removed.
  3. Jars can have labeling but it must be on the jar neatly.
  4. Food should be canned in clear standard canning mason jars and MUST BE canned within the last year.
  5. Any jars may be opened at the discretion of the judges.
  6. The Best Of Competition will not be responsible for lost or damaged exhibits.
  7. Exhibitors do not have to be present at the time of judging.

ALL CANNED FOODS THAT ARE NOT PROCESSED ACCORDING TO USDA RECOMMEDNDATIONS OR THAT DO NOT MEET SAFE CANNING STANDARDS WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED FOR JUDGING!

Judging Criteria:

Quality (Judging by Appearance)                               60 points

  • Uniformity—Size, shape and color
  • Pack-Full with right proportion of solids and liquids.
  • Must have a correct amount of head space

Quality of liquid                                                          30 points

  • Free from sediment, clear natural color
  • No food color

Appearance of Jar                                                       10 Points

  • Jar must be clean, clear, and free from nicks.
  • Lids must be rust free with no dents or nicks

Baked Goods

Category Rules:

  1. Commercially prepared mixes, pie shells, fillings or dough may not be used.
  2. All baked goods must be submitted on disposable plates and covered or sealed with clear plastic wrap or sealable (Ziploc) bags.
  3. Please make sure that you submit the quantity indicated for each category.
  4. Exhibitors are not allowed in the tent during judging.

Floral Entries

Entry Date and Times:

Rules:

  1. Only three entries per class per household or farm.
  2. All entries must be homegrown, clean, ripe and/or edible unless otherwise stated.
  3. The exhibitor agrees that any perishable product may be removed from display after judging if the product reaches a state of decomposition.
  4. Classes may be further defined at the discretion of the chairperson if there are sufficient entries.
  5. Entry forms without the proper name will be disqualified.
  6. All general Best Of Competition rules apply.
  7. Entries may not leave until the close of the Farmers Market on Saturday, July 27th.
  8. The Best Of Competition assumes no responsibility in case of loss or damaged exhibits.
  9. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to pick up and dispose of the exhibits.
  10. No artificial flowers, fruit, nuts, vegetables or foliage.
