Effective January 1, 2013, the Prince George County Code was changed by the Board of Supervisors to permit proration of personal property tax on motor vehicles, trailers and semitrailers. Under the new procedures, motor vehicles and trailers will be taxed for the portion of the year that the personal property is legally located in Prince George County. The legal location, or "situs," of a motor vehicle, trailer or semitrailer is defined as the place where the property is normally kept or garaged.
For more information on proration, click here.
Personal Property tax forms will no longer be mailed out effective January 1, 2011 for vehicles, trailers and boats.
Prince George County adopted an ordinance to file Personal Property Tax Returns by "Exception", which means starting January 1, 2011, the Commissioner of the Revenue’s office will NO LONGER mail Personal Property Tax Returns to individuals who own vehicles, trailers or boats in the County. If there are no changes to your property, no action is necessary by you. If you have added or deleted a vehicle, moved, changed your name or had any other change to your property, you are required per State Code 58.1-3518.1 and County Code Sec. 74-2 to notify our office and file an updated Personal Property Tax Return by February 5 for proper taxation. Personal Property Tax Returns can be obtained by downloading the form from our website, calling or visiting the office.
***Forms will continue to be sent to taxpayers who own Business Equipment, Machinery & Tools, Mobile Homes and Aircraft which are still required to be filed annually***
