Message from the County Administrator
November, 2017

This message is a monthly update in 2017 to better update our citizens and visitors to the website. The information serves as a status report for ongoing projects, and also serves as a preview to different happenings that are in the planning stages.

County Government Offices will be closed Friday, November 10 in observance of the Veterans Day holiday. Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Monday, November 13. County offices will also be closed at 12:30 Wednesday, November 22, Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. Monday, November 27.

A Veterans Day ceremony will be held on the Old Courthouse Lawn at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 11. The public is invited to participate.

The General Election and a Special Election for the Office of Treasurer will be held Tuesday, November 7 in Prince George County. Voting precincts open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Election results will be posted as soon as they are available at www.princegeorgecountyva.gov. The Board of Supervisors will hold its meetings this month at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 15 and Tuesday, November 28 in the Board Room of the County Administration Building. A worksession will precede the November 15 meeting at 6 p.m. The tentative agenda topics are: (1) Five-Year Financial Plan; and (2) VDOT Stormwater Maintenance Project agreements.

The Prince George Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will hold its final class and graduation ceremony at 6 p.m. Thursday, November 2 at Oakland Baptist Church.

The Prince George Community Police Academy will finish up this month with classes on November 3 at 2 p.m. in the Jury Assembly Room & November 14 at 2 p.m. in the Bland Building. A graduation ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, November 17 in the Board Room of the Administration Building.

The Kevin Ferguson Scholarship Travel Baseball Tournament will be held November 4-5 at various Prince George fields. Games get underway at 8 a.m. each day.

The last day for in-person absentee voting will be Saturday, November 4 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the Office of the Registrar.

A free concert in honor of military personnel will be held at the Burrowsville Community Center from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, November 4 featuring ‘David Osborne and the RAHF.’

A ‘Concert of Light: A Night with the Veterans’ will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, November 4 at the Beacon Theatre.

The Prince George Public School Division will host its ‘Community Appreciation Breakfast’ at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 8 at Prince George High School.

The Recreation Advisory Committee will meet at 12:00 Noon Wednesday, November 8 at the Community Center on Old Stage Road.

The Dementia 411 series will continue at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, November 9 at the Prince George Library.

The Prince George Citizens Academy will hold its final class and graduation from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, November 9 at the Heritage Center.

The State Fall Finale Baseball Tournament will be held November 11-12 at various Prince George fields. Games begin daily at 8 a.m.

The Prince George School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, November 20 in the Board Room of the Administration Building.

Coal the Therapy Dog will visit residents at Brighter Living at 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 15.

The James House will continue its ‘Movie & Discussion’ series at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 15 at the administrative offices.

The ‘Alzheimer’s & Dementia Education Series’ will continue Wednesday, November 15 from 6-7 p.m. at Sunflower Gardens.

The Appomattox River Water & South Central Wastewater authorities will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 16 at the Petersburg office.

The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, November 16 in the Emergency Operations Center.

The Prince George Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 16 in the Board Room of the Administration Building.

Riverside Community Corrections will host the 4th Annual CIT Awards Ceremony at 8 a.m. Friday, November 17 at the Beacon Theatre.

The Petersburg Area Regional Tourism (PART) Board of Directors will meet at 11a.m. Friday, November 17 at the offices of the Regional Planning Commission in Petersburg.

The Prince George Promise Board of Directors will meet at 2 p.m. Friday, November 17 in the Prince George Library.

Prince George TRIAD will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, November 27 at the Prince George Library.

The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, November 27 in the Board Room of the Administration Building.

The holiday season will kickoff with the Annual Lighting of the Christmas Tree at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 29 on the Old Courthouse Lawn.

Here is a capsule glance of other activities that will be happening within County government during the month of November:

• The Board of Supervisors at its November 15 meeting will receive four reports: (1) Fort Lee; (2) VDOT; (3) Appomattox Regional Park Canoe Launch; and (4) Insurance Services Rating Update.

• The Board of Supervisors at its November 15 meeting will consider a request for funding by the Friends of the Lower Appomattox River.

• The Board of Supervisors at its November 15 meeting will consider a claim from a citizen requesting refund of a fee.

• The Board of Supervisors at its November 15 meeting will consider changes to the Employee Personnel policies.

• The Board of Supervisors at its November 15 meeting will continue discussion of a property maintenance issue on Union Branch Road.

• The Board of Supervisors at its November 28 meeting will consider a report from Registrar Katherine Tyler on the 2017 General Election.

• The Board of Supervisors at its November 28 meeting will consider VDOT stormwater maintenance project agreements.

• The Board of Supervisors at its November 28 meeting will discuss legislative proposals for the 2018 General Assembly.

• The Board of Supervisors at its November 28 meeting will consider changes to the Employee Personnel policies.

• The Board of Supervisors at its November 28 meeting will discuss replacement of gymnasium bleachers at the Central Wellness Center.

• Various Parks & Recreation fall activities are winding down and registration is being accepted for winter programs. Registration can be accepted at www. http://www.princegeorgecountyva.gov.

• The search will continue this month to fill two key positions within County Government: Director of Utilities; and Building Official.

• Bid documents will be extended this month to ultimately choose a contractor to construct a new courtroom in the basement of the Courthouse.

• Construction projects to advance this month include: Extension of water lines for Pine Ridge Mobile Home Park; Luca Restaurant; Star Express; and Love’s Travel Center.
