SOUTHPARK BOULEVARD OVERPASS STRUCK ON I-95 NORTH IN COLONIAL HEIGHTS

Inspections ongoing for repairs; the overpass to remain closed until further notice

Bridge inspectors complete an evaluation of the structure following the crash

COLONIAL HEIGHTS—Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews have reopened the left and center lanes on northbound Interstate 95 following a crash at Southpark Boulevard (mile marker 53) in Colonial Heights. The Southpark Boulevard overpass was struck at approximately 10:30 a.m. The northbound right lane on I-95, the ramp from I-95 north to Southpark Boulevard and the ramp from Southpark Boulevard to I-95 north are expected to remain closed overnight for bridge repairs.

In addition, the Southpark Blvd./W. Roslyn Rd. overpass is closed. Drivers are encouraged to use an alternate route until further notice.

There is currently a three mile backup on I-95 north and a one mile backup on I-85 north.

VDOT crews conducted an immediate structural inspection and found damage to the exterior beam, which requires Southpark Blvd. to remain closed for further inspections and repairs.

“Following the removal of crash debris, crews determined that immediate bridge repairs are necessary for the safety of the traveling public,” said Steven McNeely, district maintenance engineer. “We will continue to inspect the overpass to determine the extent of the damage and establish a schedule for additional repairs.”
