FOLAR Partners with WAL-MART and Prince George Parks and Recreation to Build a Fitness Trail
On October 15th and 16th, FOLAR will partner with WAL-MART and Prince George Parks and Recreation to build a fitness trail at the Appomattox River Regional Park. The Park is located along the Appomattox River behind the Riverside Regional Jail in Prince George. Work will be performed by volunteers from the WAL-MART Distribution Center located in Dinwiddie County, FOLAR volunteers, and workers from Prince George Parks and Recreation. This trail addition will be made up of 10 stations with the brand name “Fit Trail”. It will enhance the existing mile of trails in the park with some exercise options. Other work to be done will be trail clearing, rock addition to the trails, grass cutting, bridge building, and other park maintenance. FOLAR has partnered with WAL-MART in the past at Ferndale Park in Dinwiddie to renovate areas of that park. This is part of a regional effort to create infrastructure along the Appomattox River where citizens can access the river and enjoy its unique and irreplaceable setting.
The Appomattox River Regional Park is part of a regional trail system that will one day be a 22-mile trail along the Appomattox River. It is the signature project of FOLAR who operate under the Crater Planning Commission umbrella. Creating this regional education center opens an outdoor classroom for the region. Since 2003, the Park has grown from an original 25 acres of woodland to 67 acres of trails, pavilions, bathrooms, a fishing pier, a canoe launch, a stone bridge, overlooks, and wood bridges over wetlands. It has been a true volunteer effort along with many partners and the blessing of the Prince George Board of Supervisors.
