VGR Named One of the Top Ten Successful Aviation & Aerospace Clusters in the South |
|

Southern Business Development has named Virginia's Gateway Region and Prince George County as one of the Top Ten Aviation and Aerospace Clusters in the South due to the region's strategic location in the middle of the United States Defense Triangle, the construction of the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM), and Rolls-Royce's Crosspointe campus.
Southern Business Development highlighted CCAM's state-of-the-art collaborative research & development facility, where Virginia's top research and teaching institutions work with leading industry partners to facilitate industry research relative to surface coatings engineering and manufacturing systems. CCAM is the only collaboration of its kind in North America, and one of only seven in the world. VGR's Aerospace Cluster is a big reason why the South has emerged as the world's aviation and aerospace capital.

Virginia State University's Business School Named Best among Historically Black Colleges and Universities |
VSU's Reginald F. Lewis School of Business (RFLSB) has been named the "Best Business Program at an HBCU" by the Center for HBCU Media Advocacy. RFLSB is ranked among the top five percent of the nation's business schools through its accreditation with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). RFLSB launched a completely revamped curriculum in 2009 and made history in 2010 by becoming the first school in the nation to deliver its core curriculum predominantly in digital format. This key innovation led to the school being awarded the 2011 Governor's Award for Technology in Higher Education.
The role of higher education as a major driver of economic development is well established, and will increase as further changes in technology, globalization, and demographics impact the United States. To remain competitive in light of these changes, regions across the country will need to improve productivity and adopt an innovative spirit. Thanks to Virginia State University, the Gateway Region is ahead of the curve.

Innovation Ecosystems | MassChallenge |
|

There world is full of great ideas but few become a reality. According to the U.S. Department of Labor and Statistics, the majority of failures in American startup companies occur within the first two years. Novice entrepreneurs require advice, resources, and funding to bring their ideas to fruition. The gap between the resources entrepreneurs need and the ability of the entrepreneurial ecosystem to provide them led to the creation of the MassChallenge in Boston, Massachusetts.
The MassChallenge is the world's largest accelerator program and startup competition. The program utilizes the power of competition "to create urgency, and to identify and aggregate high-impact teams and resources."The aim is to strengthen and accelerate finalists by providing them high-quality, personalized mentorship and by connecting them to potential team members, advisors, customers, and sponsors.
The MassChallenge offers a three month accelerator program and $1M in cash awards and $4M plus in in-kind support. This program is open to anyone in the world from any industry. The 2012 Challenge saw 1,237 participants from 35 countries and 36 states.

Partner Spotlight: Franklin Development Group, LLC
|
|
Franklin Development Group is redeveloping the 15-acre former Brown and Williamson Tobacco Complex in Petersburg. Perry Street Lofts are the first of six buildings to be adapted using historic tax credits and VHDA tax-exempt bond financing. The factory has been converted into 149 mixed-income apartments. The renovations began in February 2010 but were hampered by a lightning strike on July 17, 2010 that resulted in the largest fire in the history of Petersburg. The Developers and KBS rebuilt the damaged portions of the building and have now begun leasing properties. The project exceeded $22 million, including the cost of rebuilding after the fire. About 60 of the 149 units are already leased. Landmark Property Services is leasing about one unit a day, and is drawing tenants from Richmond to Emporia.
