August 14 Meeting Recap

BOS Approves Location Of
New County Welcome Signs

        The Board of Supervisors at its August 14 meeting approved the locations for new welcome signs into Prince George County that will serve as the face to visitors entering from various directions.

        Without taking a vote, the BOS by consensus authorized Deputy County Administrator Jeff Stoke to move forward with recommending eight sites for which the new signs will be posted. The recommendation will now move on to VDOT for its final approval.

        The eight sites under consideration are:

        1. Route 144 (Temple Avenue) eastbound from Colonial Heights.

        2. Route 36 (Oaklawn Boulevard) eastbound from Petersburg.

        3. Route 460 (County Drive) westbound from Sussex.

        4. Route 460 (County Drive) eastbound from Petersburg.

        5. Route 106 (Courthouse Road) eastbound from Petersburg.

        6. Route 156 (Prince George Drive) southbound from Hopewell.

        7. Route 301 (South Crater Road) southbound from Petersburg.

        8. Route 156 (Prince George Drive) southbound from Charles City County.

        Other matters to come before the BOS at its meeting and worksession:

  • Received a report from Assessor Rod Compton on the County’s Land Use Program and new changes that will be implemented.
  • Also received a proposal from Compton regarding a new Pictometry program and approved $39,000 to implement.
  • Received a presentation from IT Director Kirsten Cherry on the new look of the County website.
  • Held two public hearings and adopted ordinances that: (1) Makes a person convicted of manufacturing methamphetamines liable for the cost of cleaning up the methamphetamine lab; (2) Provides for a $2500 civil penalty for a person falsely representing that he holds a contractor’s business license.
  • Discussed possible changes in the nuisance animals’ ordinance and number of dogs in platted subdivisions and authorized a public hearing for September 11. 
  • Presented a resolution of commendation to the family of the late Captain Jesse Ozbat.
  • Presented a resolution of commendation to Becky Kirk for her service on the Recreation Advisory Commission.
  • Approved on the Consensus Agenda a resolution proclaiming September 3-7 National Payroll Week.
  • Approved on the Consensus Agenda an appropriation to the Parks & Recreation Department of $30,000 from a grant received by the John Randolph Foundation.
  • Approved on the Consensus Agenda a commendation for Brigadier General Gwen Bingham.
  • Approved on the Consensus Agenda a resolution appropriating $31,180 for payments due for the Appomattox River Park Access Road.
  • Approved on the Consensus Agenda a settlement agreement of $444,458.98 with Prince George Electric Cooperative on West Quaker Road for property impact and pole relocation.
  • Approved on the Consensus Agenda the waiver of Special Event fees for the Rotary Club of Prince George and the Hopewell-Prince George Crime Solvers.
  • Approved on the Consensus Agenda budget adjustments to Fiscal Year 2012.
  • Received a report from Bob Zimmerman of VDOT.
  • Received a report from Police Captain Eric Young regarding National Night Out activities scheduled held August 7. 
  • Received a report from Finance Director Trish Davidson and Cherry on the MUNIS technology system.
  • Appointed Doris Gallup to the Appomattox Regional Library Board.
  • Deferred a request from Carson Volunteer Fire Department for $20,000 for its 50th anniversary celebration to the September 11 meeting.
  • Approved an Architectural & Engineering Contract with Art & Architecture for services related to the renovation of the Human Services Building.
  • Appointed Ruth Parham to the Human Services Advisory Committee.
  • Approved a resolution opposing tolls on I-95.
  • Approved reducing the percentage of fees at the Building Official’s discretion for the Disputanta Ruritan Club for renovation and renovation of facilities.

  • Approved the method in which the County will handle reductions to Aid to Localities for FY 2013.
  • Took no action on a resolution authorizing a request to VDOT naming the Roundabout at the entrance of Fort Lee Gate A in honor of Jesse Ozbat.
  • Authorized a public hearing for October 9 to receive proposals from individuals and groups looking to establish a hunting lease for the Buren & Tacon properties.
