(Prince George, VA) – Deadly Vehicle Crash Claims the Life of a County Teen

Emergency responders were called to the 14000 block of Prince George Drive around 4:40 Monday afternoon for a two-vehicle crash. First arriving units discovered one vehicle on its side blocking the roadway and a second vehicle off the road near the woods. The driver of the overturned vehicle, 16-year-old Ryan A. Newman, died at the scene. Newman was a student at Prince George County High School. LifeEvac Medical Helicopter took the driver of the second vehicle, 18-year-old Joshua S. Lyons, to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries. Both victims were trapped in their vehicles; it took rescue workers nearly 20 minutes to free them from the wreckage.

Preliminary investigation suggests that the Newman vehicle, 2000 Chevrolet Blazer, was southbound on Prince George Drive and crossed over the centerline colliding with Lyons’s 2003 Toyota head-on. Drivers were the only occupants in the vehicles. Prince George County Police Department’s Motor Vehicle Crash Investigation Team is continuing their investigation into what factors may have contributed to the tragic crash.

The road was closed for nearly two hours during the rescue operation and investigation of this incident. In addition to county police, Prince George County Fire, EMS, and Emergency Management units from the Emergency Crew, Co. 2 (Disputanta), and Co. 3 (Carson) all assisted with this crash.
